If you grind sulphur and sodium chloride together, you will get a pale yellow substance that is still a mixture, and shows all the properties of the two substances in it. It would be very easy to separate the two - just add water, shake to dissolve the NaCl and filter. The NaCl could be obtained from the filtrate by evaporation, and the sulphur is the residue in the filter paper.

they can be distinguished by two ways, either by appearance or by dissolving them in water. solid sulfur is yellow color while NaCl is look like a white or semitransperance solid. When you take some sample of NaCl and dissolve them in water, NaCl is able to dissolve into water but sulfur just cant.
