The reason you have to chop his up his food into little crumbs, is because your fish is probably still a baby. Its best not to put the fish in direct sunlight because that can cause bacteria to grow if you leave the floating pellets inside. The best type of fish food ive found is "Hikari Betta Bio Gold: Baby Pellet"
beta fish are quite picky when it comes to new food so it will take them awhile to adjust to it.

They're pretty fish, and require little work.
To sum it up:
1. Keep the water clean.
2. Don't fill the bowl to the brim, the fish needs room to breathe.
3. Feed it about 4 pellets one day, then 2 the next to prevent bloat.
4. A real plant is beneficial.
5. Add one teaspoon of AQUARIUM salt per gallon. Salt does not escape the tank so be careful, only add a dose for the amount of water you replaced.
6. Give him some small hiding places.
7. Vary its diet.

your food source is too big for his mouth. Pillets come in different sizes. A little sun doesn't hurt, but if its a little tank, and not knowing your climate or the type of fish you have in it, this is hard to answer. Just remember sun heats the water, too hot the fish will die

Happily they don't need much care. They can breath surface air, and can live in an unfiltrated bowl. You do need to change the water periodically if you do not use a filter. In the wild, they essentially live in rain puddles in Asia. You cannot put two males in the same tank. They fight. They don't eat much, and it is not wise to overfeed them. They grow to about an inch and a half including fins, and they generally have about a 2 year life span .

They are perhaps the easiest fish to take care of. They only need to be fed a couple times a week.

don't put your betta under direct sunlight... or he will die...
your betta might be weak and he can't eat a whole pellet until it sits in the water for a while and sogs.... then when the pellets gets softer and soggie, the betta would eat the pellet.

Change water about once every two weeks. They like 5 gallons of non-flowing water -- distilled water is best. Keep them seperate and no fancy fishtank paraphernalia for them to swim around since it could shred their tails. They eat about twice per day -- four pellets with each of the two feedings. No direct sunlight.
