Life is only real because my brain interprets various signals and emotional responses to cope with this very question. So whether it's real or not does not concern me. What I do with this reality is what I am concerned with.

You seem to be having a crisis about this. I can only offer my advice in the hope that it helps you.
We can only know that the life we live is "real" by trusting that what we perceive is reality. There's always the outside possiblity that what we perceive is an elaborate deception by a greater power, but even if that's so, then all we can do is play along.
However, in my opinion, the puzzle fits together just a little too conveniently for reality to be an elaborate hoax on just my (or your) mind. People seem to have memory and communication independent of my input, and certain "laws" of nature and reality seem to apply independently of my knowledge of such. To my understanding, things are happening in Somalia as much as they are happening in North Hollywood, and I can't affect any such events without direct physical interference. That's enough evidence to satisfy my own curiosity about the nature of reality.

Philosophers have considered this problem for a long time, and though some claim to have solved it, I find their arguments unconvincing. For example, as another person responded to your question already, how do I know that you are not a figment of my imagination? How do you know that I am not a figment of your imagination? A person might ask if it even matters. I suppose for them, probably not. All that matters for me is that I think I exist. Beyond that, I can offer no proof that I exist because if I don't exist, how could I explain anything else? It doesn't phase me too much though.

Reality is all a matter of perception - your reality is different to my reality is different to everyone else's reality. You know Albert Einstein, who proved that everything is realtive? Well that applies to people just as much as particles - everything you perceive or know or think is all relative to you. Whether it's "real" or not has no meaning - if you are seeing something or thinking something, then it is real for you.
If you are worried more about whether the outside world is "real" or not then I have the same answer - if you find it to be real, then it is! It doesn't matter how it might be perceived by others, because that's not your reality. That's what "I think, therefore I am" really means. So don't worry about it! Just be!

What do you mean by "real"? How would life have to be different for it to be "real". Please explain your terms.
I have an answer for some meanings of the word "real" but I do need to know which one! To say something is "not real" you have to have an idea of "real" - what is it?
PS Goodsirhugh - that would be Descartes rather than Voltaire. He used it to prove his existence not the reality of life. He still had big problems with the reality of life.

That is certainly a interesting question, where did you hear this? I don't see how our lives are "fake" I mean life isn't something you can't see like faith or god, so it's really hard to argue that we aren't really living life and it's real or not.
Btw - Mr.Samsa gave the best answer! I think.

Nope, because it does not make room for the irrational. Neither words could be concieved without each other. There is more to it than that though, but I would rather you not get a god complex.

Life is real, you only have one, make the best of it, no matter real or not, you only getv to go through once.
Be happy with waht you have.. and if you must test it, have some pinch you real hard.. Did that hurt ? oh well it must be real !!

Yeah. I feel that from another perspective, somewhere out there, we are not real..
I don't know that the life we live is real at all.
I prefer to think of it as semi-real. Invisible.
But still there.
Are you real???
Prove it.
I can't.
