All of that depends on where you work, but here goes...

Salaries -- In a big city, salaries are usually significantly more than if you work in a small city/town. But then, cost-of-living tends to be more in a big city too. I started out as a graphic designer in a small city (70,000 people) at a small design agency (5 people), making $9/hour just out of school. After 5+ years, I'm up to $14/hour and will probably reach the top of my earning potential in my current position here pretty soon. To advance higher, I'd probably have to start my own agency or take on additional responsibility. But like I said, I'm in a pretty small market. If you are talented and in a big city, you can do pretty well. And it helps to have people skills so you're not just some dysfunctional artist they keep in the back and are afraid to let out to meet clients.

Work environment -- totally depends on where you work and who you work with. My experiences have been good.

Working hours -- will also depend on the agency you work for. I work a typical 8-hour day, but the small agencies I've worked for have been flexible in allowing me to basically come and go as I please, as long as I get my hours in and the job done. Larger companies may be more rigid in their clock-punching policies. Some companies may even allow you to work from home if you've proven yourself and the situation allows.

Anyway, hope that helps!

I did a different kind of art degree, but I know people who majored in Graphic Design.

The difference between graphic design and a fine art field like painting is that with graphics, you are pleasing a client. You might have to change some design you really like because your customer doesn't like it. Also, I think my friends who toiled away at it for 4 years find they don't get much respect because there are so many graphic applications out there that people can buy for their computers and they think that makes them an artist, but it doesn't. There is a lot to knowing how to balance a composition or create a logo that is reproducable in black and white, in color, blown up to read on the side of a truck or tiny like on letterhead--most people don't realize the talent that takes.

The pay will depend on where you live, where you work and how strong your portfolio is. My friends were freelancers so they had to pay their own benefits, but they could work at home and set their own hours.

A "Degree" in graphic arts isn't really respectable in the same way as a "normal" degree. You could reasonably expect to earn between £9000 - £14000 per annum working in nurseries or similar unskilled work
