♡Most anything you'd bring from your hometown/state will be a nice gift. Something edible or that can be shared by a family is good! Chocolates, cookies, tea, coffee...
~I just got back from the US- California, and what everyone asked me to bring them back was wine, chocolates, boxed/tinned cookies, calendars, postcards, pens, American cigs and a few Calif. picture books (coffee table books). Additionally, I brought key chains, cellphone straps, pencils and nuts. All were greatly received!
Hope this helps and have a great time here in Japan!♡

My own instinct says books, especially books about American history, or books which are themselves history, such as Mark Twain. For one thing, most Japanese read English far better than they speak it, and so they would enjoy the opportunity to learn something about the US and also practice their English.
If you know something of their tastes and interests, a really great book would be one about a museum collection of whatever is their interest. For example, a famous doll museum for a doll collector, or the Museum of Modern Art for an art collector, or the Smithsonian for a history buff.

It's nice to receive something from your home town. They don't have to be fancy, although wrapping them in some nice paper or tissue is polite.
I gave pins, postcards, and other kind of touristy items.
