IF you are talking about offline computer games, disabling an active firewall, virus shield, etc. will help free the amount of RAM your computer is using, along with devoting more of the processors energy to the current program. GO ahead and deactivate these, but ONLY if your modem is off/on standby first (if you have a broadband connection.) Also make sure that no other programs are running (turn off the programs which have icons in the lower right-hand corner.)

IF your game is an online game, just make sure that no other active programs are going. If you are playing an online game, you'll want yor firewall and virus shield on, since you CAN get viruses through online games.

i can tell you a few FOR SURE WAYS to reduce lag to minimal or none at all. i got lag for all my pc games reduced to little or none at all. first dont run any programs while playing game too. make sure your video card settings are adjusted apprpriately, just go to video settings in game and experiment with it, and u should find it helps tremendously. if that dont help then MORE THAN LIKELY you need a more currently updated video card and drivers. i know those will do the trick though because i have gotten my oblivion game to run on my pc with hardly any lag at all and im using a radeon 9800 128meg card. and the firewall has nothing to do with it, that only deals with online protection for your computer. i know this cause me and my cousin build computers.

well, is your internet using dialup? cos it seriously laggggggggggggggs badly. You might want to consider switching to broadband or something. Also, if you ARE using broadband, do you have a password for your wireless network? Someone usin your network can half your speed to an irritating snail's pace...bad experiences...

You could also try choosing the low resolution option before loading your game, or turning off the music. It helps a little.

Also,do clean your computer's hard disk!!! Delete hardly-used files, defragment the hard disk and check for spware! If there are any, destroy it,or just do a Reinstall.

Good Luck:)

Lag is the game server, your graphics. ect.
Its very unlikely a firewall is causing lag
Just make sure you arent running any other programs, and your graphics card is up to date.
