Teachers can and will check for plagarism at their discretion.
Now, it is easier to check a paper or report for plagarism because teachers can become members of websites where the text of a report is actually scanned for copywritten quotes and excerpts from books and academic journals. The teacher then receives a report indicating what percentage of a report's text is plagarized. This is all done in a matter of several minutes to several hours (depending on the website and the amount of reports submitted for review.

I second the teacher from CSU. Also keep in mind high school essays are pretty short compared to college ones. Barely takes any time at all to go through a stack of 30 papers and check for plagarism. Just cut and paste.
Plagarism is a huge issue nowadays because of how easily it can be done now with the internet right there. If your friends get caught they will most likely fail the semester. In college the consequences would be worse than that.

Most teachers don't really check for plagiarism. However, they usually can tell by the students progress throughout the semester or school year. If the student has turned in "C or B" papers then all of a sudden turns in a paper that it very comprehensive and way out of the ordinary from previous work, they're going to know something is up. What it comes down to is what you as a student learns. If they cheat to get a good grade then they are just hurting themselves cuz they still won't know anything.

We're doing a Grad Proj and the organizer said that they would hand scan ( I think) each through some program that they had to pay for ( I think) and it would check for plagiarism through the internet. I don't think that for ordinary assignments they scan the work. Maybe the teachers might just notice big words that they don't think the student would use normally. For a foreign language class its pretty easy for the teacher to know if you' plagiarized because you might not have learned a verb tense or something.

If the teacher finds one or more of the essay topics interesting the teacher may sit down and read the article(s) thoroughly. Do not underestimate the teacher who probably sees a lot of the article topics on the news/Internet. Do things the right way and you will not have to worry.

Probably teachers are more aware of these things than students think. Achild in my daughters class received a b for her project because the teacher thought she copied something word for word. This was a year 6 class.A good teacher would know if this is not the work of the students.

Be original. Even if you think it is not good, and even if it is actually not good, you will get the recognition you deserve. You get the satisfaction of having done something on your own. It is all about learning.
That said, can teahers tell if a plagiarism took place? of course they can. I am a teacher. It just sticks out like a sore thumb. Believe me it is quite easy.
Don't do it.

It is suprisingly easy to spot plagiarism - it usualy stands out a mile as it just doesn't feel right - with google and other internet searches it is very easy to find out where phrases / sentences came from (or did not come from!)
