Firewalls are a wonderful thing. The problem is that not all firewalls are completely effective, and that some firewalls consume an enormous amount of your computer's system resources due to poorly written code and bad design.
Have you ever installed a cheap anti-virus or anti-spyware program and it suddenly feels like your computer is running in slow motion? The same thing happens with many firewalls. Some software companies add "bling" to the interface to sell the sizzle and not the steak. Others load the interface with ads and teasers enticing you to upgrade or buy their other products.
That being said, over the past year, I've contracted to a number of corporate clients who actually paid us to remove one vendor's firewall product. Even many of the top names in the industry can't be trusted.
I'm a professional. I can have anything I want. I only endorse what I use, and always use what I endorse. When I recommend a product to a Fortune 500 company, and I'm wrong, it can cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs and lost productivity.
I look for several key things in any firewall package. It has to lock down all the open ports. It has to "stealth" or hide the ports from outside viewing. It has to notify me anytime a new program tries to access the Internet. It must seal out intruders. It must consume a minimal amount of resources. It must not have a negative impact on system stability.
Of the free standalone products, ZoneAlarm has always been the best. The free version has a few minor limitations, but ZoneAlarm Pro is nearly bulletproof. I use this on my work machines, where system speed is not critical.
Sometimes, you may choose a suite of security products, which includes anti-virus and anti-spyware. Of these security suites, BitDefender Pro or BitDefender Plus have about the best mix of performance and stability.
If your main concern is a free package to provide reasonable security against trojans, spyware and viruses seeking to phone home, Microsoft's Windows Defender is normally acceptable for most home users, like your Great Aunt Sophie.
On my work machines which are mission critical, I run E-Trust Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy and ZoneAlarm Pro.
On my gaming machines where performance is critical, I run Bitdefender Professional Plus after using Spybot S & D to innoculate the system.
With either configuration, I have never had a virus or spyware infect the system without being caught. Hackers made it through my hardware firewall solution on several occasions, but were stopped cold by both ZoneAlarm and Bitdefender.
We have six computers on the bench at the moment, running a series of tests to evaluate AVG firewall for a client. We have not completed testing, but the initial consensus seems to be that it's better than Windows Defender, but it still can't beat either ZoneAlarm or Bitdefender.
I hope this helps you a bit. However, your chances of being hacked from the outside are slim if your ports are closed and hidden, which nearly any firewall can manage. Your biggest risk comes from a virus, trojan, or spyware/adware planted on your computer. It is essential that your firewall lock down all programs unless you have given them permission to access the web.

Everything that AVG makes is crap except for their anti-spyware!
An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
