Now that I'm in college, I'd like to open a bank account of my own, but there are so many banks in the area I'm not sure which to choose. What should I look for in a bank and how do I choose the one that's best for me? Or are they all the same?

A bank that offer free checking. Be careful of other hidden charges like atm fees if you use another banks atm. The other bank will probably charge you anyway. What the charge is for ordering checks. Some banks offer free on-line bill pay or at least on-line banking to check your account. Also see how long it takes for the deposit to get credited to your account and if checks that you deposit into your account are held or if you have immediate availability of funds.

I just graduated from college & can tell you.

Get one with free student checking - that's a plus.
Proximity to campus is important as well as hours they keep.

Interest rates etc matter if you have a lot of money. But if you are like me, you don't have a lot of money sitting around in the 1st place.

A large bank is nice too (like Bank of America). That way if you're out of town, the town you're in will have a branch too.

Also if you're prone to bounce checks sometimes, you might check the fees. Those can add up.
