Can someone please help me to clarify the instructions for sewing this bag. This is my first real sewing project and I am very frustrated and lost. Is there supposed to be a bottom bit to this bag? I don't understand how the side bits work, since they are so much taller than the bag front pattern are they supposed to fold over? Why does it have the center fold thing written on it? Please help!!!!

Here is the pattern:

If I uderstand your problem correctly... The gusset piece is supposed to be placed on the fold of the fabric. The curved arrow at the bottom directs you to place that side of the gusset on the fold creating one long piece (not two) once it is cut and unfolded. This will the go down one side, accross the bottom, and up the other side. The gusset is the bottom plus both sides all in one piece. Does this make sense?

You only need to go to a fabric store like Jo Ann's and buy a pattern for something in your size, or in the size you want to make. Of course you're also going to need stuff like sewing scissors, thread, fabric and pins. You'll consult with the person cutting fabric about how much you need. Also, I would try to avoid anything with a zipper or buttons in the beginning. Those are going to take a little bit of experience to master. When you get it all home, pre-shrink 100% cotton fabric first by washing it hot and using a hot dryer. Iron it and lay the fabric out according to the instructions given. Cut out your pattern pieces (just the ones you need), and lay them out according to the instructions, pin them and cut. Then follow instructions given. They might not be so clear when you are first starting. If you don't have an experienced person who sews to advise you, try to find help on Websites. (some listed below)

One long piece goes down the side, across the bottom, and up the other side. For the center fold pattern piece, fold a piece of fabric and place the center fold line on the fold. Then cut around the other (not folded) side to make one fabric piece twice as wide as the pattern piece.

It's a cute bag, and you'll enjoy it when it's done. Good luck!
