The mainstream media, in their not-all-that-liberal style, likes to call Sen McCain a "mavarick" and a "moderate", but when I look at his voting record I don't see it. On social issues he's as conservative as anyone, and he's voted with Bush on all the major legislation. I have alot of respect for him personally, and several years ago wrote a letter thanking him for supporting an issue that was important to me (received a staff generated reply too, which I still have), but the mavarick stuff seems to be a media creation. Can't see him getting elected President since Pat Robertson has publicly stated he'll "never" (the word he used) support McCain. Your thoughts?

McCain is what used to be called an ultra-conservative. Bush beat McCain up with dirty tricks in the 2000 primaries and he's been trying to position himself for the presidency ever since. To attain this goal, he will say anything and often plays the same games as Bush. Because of his multiple and changing positions on Iraq and middle east policy, there's no telling what he'd do if he were elected.

Maverick? Hardly ... Moderate? Yes ... as a neocon.

McCain is mostly conservative in fundamentals, but his voting record and his actions are more for liberal Republican ... er, Neo-Conservative.

I think McCain is ok, but I don't think he would be the best candidate. Unfortunately, I think the politics are so tainted either way, that most on Capital Hill would be poor choices for President.

As you said, it makes the corporate media all warm and fuzzy.

When Jesse Helms (referred to often as "that pig in the Senate") was in the senate he and McCain had identical records. Now, he's ranked 4th most conservative senator.

He's a fraud.

John Mc Cain used to speak out on issues he felt strongly about & screw what the party bigwigs thought. In the past year or two, he seems to be toeing the Bush line exactly. For whatever reason, I think he sold out.

because he believes in ethics and morals unlike the rest of the Bush admin.

but yeah, he did rubberstamp bush far too often for my tastes, but i would vote for him over that mobster New York mayor any day!
