Can't seem to load the free ATT anti-virus software. Have deleted all signs of Norton and free E-wido software. Did this in safe mode as well, since ATT wrote me back to do so. Any suggestions of what to do? Is there other free anti-virus software out there? My operating system is XP.

it's possible that you have a virus on your computer, which prevents the install of some anti-virus software. If you have another computer on the network, you could try and install Norton Corporate on the 2nd machine and run a scan over the network. You could also install the 15 day free trial of Norton. Sometimes Norton will install and remove any virus files in safe mode. You can download Norton at the following site. I hope this helps.

If you do instal Norton you should run the Live Update. After all updates are installed you should restart your system before you run your scan.

Use AVG for anti-virus, and you should have kept Ewido(now AVG anti-spyware) for spyware protection. But one anti-spyware is usually not enough, so get Spyware Terminator too. Finally, use Comodo for firewall(you could use Windows firewall, but it provides no out-bound protection, so better keep it turned off). All are free, light on memory and provide solid protection.
AVG anti-virus(8.5): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
AVG anti-spyware (8): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free
Spyware Terminator (9): http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe

Here are some security tips:
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. So, don't activate the anti-virus that comes along with Spyware Terminator. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.
2.Always keep the real time scanning/resident shield of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active, especially while downloading something from file sharing networks.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 4-5 days and for viruses every 8-10 days. In case of anti-spyware, do alternate scans(scan with ST 1 time and then AVG the next time).

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.

If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.

Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.
