Lennon was always the introspective one.
He wanted people to just believe in themselves and live for one another (love) rather than getting themselves so wrapped up in "religiousness" that they missed the point about our individuality.

"I don't believe in Beatles"? Wasn't it John Lennon who said that? I think Matthew Broderick quoted that in Ferris Bueller in his "I don't believe in 'isms'...." speech.
