My roommate and I moved out of our apartment after term ended. The deposit check refund was sent to me because I had paid the original deposit but it requires HIS signature as well as mine! He lives light years away and I don't know what to do.

You need both signatures on the check.
You can call your roommate and ask him to tell your landlord to have the original check reissued in just your name.

Otherwise, overnight him the check, have him endorse it and overnight it back to you. Just don't endorse it yourself first, because then you will have a fully endorsed check floating around in the mail.

do you have his address?
you will require a notarized statement from your roommate clearly granting you permission to sign his name on that check then you can get it cashed.
It would help also if you had your room mates phone number so they can be contacted, you will most likely have to go to a bank to get this cashed. But you will need a signed and notarised statement from the roommate, and then the bank may still require you a waiting period before the check goes through your account.

If the person you shared the apartment with is not due any part of the check, and you can prove that, by maybe a certified letter from him, then perhaps the rental property owners/managers may re-issue you a check in just your name...it's worth a try.

ASK the landlord for a new rent deposit. Tell him that your roommate moved out and you need a new cheque. Aussie way of spelling cheque.

If you can contact him by phone ask him to contact your previous landlord and tell him that the money all belongs to you and would he write another check and you can return the one you have.

Two options. Ask the landlord for a new check or send it to your old roomie.

If you cant mail it to him to sign and return, try going to the bank and ask what to do and if he MUST sign it and wont...you are out of luck.

GOOD LUCK!
