Try Dark Messiah: Might and Magic. I haven't played a game that was that fun in quite a long time. It's open ended too, so you can play how you want to play. There are demos for it out there so you don't have to buy it without trying it first.
Check out this link and search for Dark Messiah demo:

I’d suggest Ultima Online freeshards at UOgateway.com. Other free emulation possibilities include Everquest and Lineage II. EQ was very disappointing to me, but others seem to like it. Linage II is fantastic, but very difficult to configure properly for free play. Now, if you want games that are designed to be free let me suggest Runescape, Neverwinter Nights, and Anarchy Online. Runescape has horrible graphics, but very deep gameplay and a large cultish following. NwN is great (basically a graphical D&D) however many of the online worlds are sparsely populated and your guy has to warp from world to world (basically module to module). Anarchy is a little off the traditional swords, dragons and magic type “fantasy” path. It is a futuristic techno world with lasers, biomechanical implants and nano technology. However there is plenty of hack and slash, great interface (once you get used to it), a large and developed world and outstanding graphics. The downside of Anarchy is that, while free, the game designers constantly push you to pay for “expansions”. Many weapons and armor pieces can only be used by those with the expansions.

So to summarize, if you want to run a world I’d suggest Ultima. It is highly customizable and playable either with friends or solo. If you just want to play a decent free game and you are willing to take a risk on something non-traditional, give Anarchy a try. Ultima requires an initial disc (pick up cheap at a used game store), and Anarchy just downloads from their site. Enjoy!

Depends on the system:
PS3: NONE! (lol)
Gamecube: Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
PS2: Final Fantasy XII
Xbox: Phantom Dust (I think is the title)
Xbox 360 and PC: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
DS: Final Fantasy III
PSP: Valkyrie Profile
Board game: Dungeons and Dragons
Free online: Runescape

I think I've covered all the bases...

look im a pro on video games you should play most of the final fantasy games & runescape if u like online games windwaker isn't an rpg.rpgs are Role Playing Games which means you can build up your stats and spend points or coins or stuff for better things like armor or weapons or stuff like that.

Aside from all the other ones stated (which are all very good), I would suggest the Shadow Hearts series. As for newer titles, I've heard good things about Rogue Galaxy, though I haven't yet played it myself.
