We just found out from an ultrsound that my unborn grandson has only one kidney. And the one that he does have is enlarged. I know we can survive with only one kidney but does anyone know if complications may arise from this after he's born? My daughter is due next month and she's really scared. She sees her OBGYN on Monday.

well, i wasnt born with one kidney, but a blockage i had in my left one when i was 3 forced the removal of it, so i kinda know. anyway, as long as the kidney is functional, there shouldnt be complications. most likely the kidney is functional because kidney failure can be detected in the womb so she would know by now. she shouldnt worry but see the doctor if anything does happen.

well, I don't know anyone with one kidney, but alot of my family had a small kidney.. (like shrunk and not useful) they are all fine..... I think I may have only one functioning, and I have lead a very normal life! I never even knew until my mother told me! As long as you have one, you can function completly normaly! Tell her not to worry.... Good Luck, I hope everything turns out ok!
