they definitely have their uses. but its very important to realize that just because they are natural does not mean that they are safe to use without a lot of caution. some of them are very potent and even toxic, so its really important to educate yourself thoroughly before using them, especially if youre taking them internally. some herbs can cause skin reactions if applied topically; some can be used safely topically but can never be taken orally.
I tend to use herbs mostly for aroma-therapy and for making teas with. seaoning food is also a good use for the edible ones. but when it comes to using herbs for self-medication, id be very careful. some herbs i use safely for specific purposes are:
--garlic (internally)--as a powerful anti-bacterial for colds, flu, immunity boosting.
--tea-tree oil (mixed with almond oil and applied topically)--as an anti-bacterial and healing agent for the skin.
lavender--aromatherapy
sage--seasoning, and makes a tea that will sooth a sore throat
parsley--breath freshener and seasoning
mint, ginger, catnip, chamomile,rosehips--good for tea
sandalwood,frankinsense,ylang-ylang,bergamont,balsam,cedar,pine--good in small doses mixed with almond oil as aromatherapy massage oil.
eucalyptus, juniper, balsam, mint--add to bathwater when you have a cold.
valerian--as a tea when you have insomnia
-----some herbs to use with caution are: senna (its a VERY potent laxative) st.johns wort (has numerous side effects). be careful of any herbal oil--its very concentrated and very potent and should only be used in a carrier oil, and never taken orally.

multi-vitamin, anti-oxidant drink with mangosteen, billberry, blueberry, St. John's Wort, And a cellular maintainence pill.
Also, occassionally I will take extra magnesium.

Anti--oxidants break down free radicals, the cellular pill is just that, helps maintain cellular function(building block of our body), and magnesium for the transport of calcium and bowel control.
