He was aressted - he was tried - found guilty - and hanged.
That's the short answer to your question.
But I think you mean "Why".

Saddam Hussein was found guilty for the 1st crime he stood trial. On that trial he was sentenced to hanging. Even though he was sentenced to hang, he actually had a 2nd trial that was also going for genocide against the Kurds. Even though Saddam was hanged for the 1st trial when all the appeals for the ruling in the 1st trial were denied, the 2nd trial continues without him. All the appeals were denied for the 1st trial, and the initial ruling for the hanging was deemed legal. Technically, when you're hanged, your neck is supposed to snap, making it painless. This is what did happen to Saddam. Yet, a lot of people criticize the hanging, because many people thought that the hanging was rushed and unnecessary. Also, the video from the cell phone that a guard filmed of the hanging did not help after being posted on the internet. Videos of the hanging had audio where the former leader of Iraq and many people present at the hanging exchanging criticisms with each other.

He was hung, as the videoes (both government and unauthorized private) verified. The Iraqi government tried to pass it off as a quiet, dignified affair; but that cellphone mpeg showed the uncensored version of the execution has left the Iraqi government with egg on its face, to put it mildly.
The hanging was a totally pointless act, motivated by sectarian vengeance than by justice. Legal scholars around the world have questioned the legality of the proceedings against him.
So much for the so-called democracy that Pres. Bush has (apparently) sought to bring about in Iraq.

1. He was found guilty of the atrocities committed in southern Iraq as supposed reprisals for a rebellion. He was also being tried for atrocities committed in northern Iraq.
2. He appealed and his appeal was rejected which meant his execution had to happen within 30 days.
3. Legal depends on how you view it. Iraq has their own laws.
4. It was not as gruesome as you might think and not as bad as what his regime did to innocent people.
5. It is always good for an evil ruler to be humiliated.

He was allowed an appeal. Rejected. His execution followed next.Killing Saddam is a sign of more violence in Iraq and more death of U.S troops. It's not going to change anything believe you me. But let God be the judge not us. Learn to forgive one another and not bear grudges against ourselves.
