What psychological effects can it have on the baby in later life? Perhaps in terms of emotional development?

I don't have PND myself; I don't have children and I'm not pregnant. The mother of someone I know had it until he (the son) was 2. I'm wondering if this could account for some peculiarites of his personality.

If the mother is self-absorbed and not readily available to the infant, the child may never bond to others appropriately. This is the time when humans learn to trust, interact and form attachments.

I am not a doctor, nor have I done any studies on this. I did, however, experience some prettty severe post partum depression. I had to start taking tranquilizers and anti-depressants due to it. My daughter is now 10 years old. I feel like I never really bonded with her as a baby. Now, she is the light of my life and we share a mother daughter bond that is amazing. We are inseperable. I think as long as the bond is eventually gained, than everything should be fine.

this is tough. no one will know / realize it until the child grows up. then you can extrapolate. it does help. eg it seems napoleon's mother kept thinking of war and victories and he went on to become a fantastic soldier. eg if you want your child to be a classical pianist, keep listening to such music during pregnancy. therefore if you didnt feel down during your pregnancy, chances are the child can develop differently. if your post natal depression is dictating the way you treat the child, then it will definitely have an effect on the child's development. so pl be careful. dont pass negative vibes to the child. its tough, try all means to get out of the depression. analyse yourself and what / why the depression and see if you can help yourself or get help to slowly wean it off. try and goodluck. god bless!
