when i turn iton it runs for about 5 seconds then blows the fuse.

move to a warmer climate where is it does not freeze. you will not need a defroster. I did. best thing i ever done

Does this happen for the other settings (ie, AC or Heater)?

The Defroster has two major power draws... one is the blower fan, but you'd be blowing fuses in the "heat" mode too if this was the case.

The second major draw is your A/C. The defrost actually kicks the A/C on to dry out the interior air. If you can run "heat" but not "defrost" I'd check out the AC.

Bad fan motor, I guess. If it was some sort of short, the fuse would blow instantly.

blower motor most likely.
