how come sometimes the flags are up half way the pole? is there a meaning to it?

The flag flies at half mast, as it's called, to signify the grieiving of the nation for a past president who recently died. His name was Gerald Ford. Flags flew at half mast following 9-11 to honor those who died that day as well.

oh goodness yes. It either means some tragedy has accord or for the most part someone very important as passed. Even though to me no one persons life is more important than the other.

it's called half staff. and they do it when a prominant person has died or on certain holidays. if you listen to the radio or watch the news you will learn more about it. take a look at the calender on these days.
