If you can wait, you are better off waiting until Windows Vista. As for features, I would not worry about speed because any system is going to be faster than what you have. But, you want to get at least 1GB RAM and 200GB hard drive. Make sure you have a DVD-RW burner. Have a dedicated video card rather than onboard. These are just some things to look at for. I would not recommend spending anymore than $1500. I believe anything more than that would be an overkill for what you need it for.

Window Vista probably won't run on your PC, and even if it does it will run without new GUI. You can buy a new PC now that's Vista ready and you can upgrade Window to Vista later. Vista still has too many things that need to fix so don't expect too much out of it.

Absolutely do NOT let your 3.5 year old sit in the front of the car as someone recommended below. He could be killed by the airbag! The back is the only safe place for children, even sick ones. Ask your doctor about what might be available. I used seabands for sickness when I was pregnant. They helped a little but not a ton. They might help him to feel like he has some kind of medicine. And even though it's a pain, the best solution is probably not to go out for "long periods" until he is old enough to communicate better and take medication . Staying out of the car is guaranteed to work 100%.

Most PC manufacturers now include a free Vista upgrade once it is available ... HP does.

Best value is an HP Media Center PC with an AMD62 X2 4600+ and higher processor. Best bang for buck.

Storage in no longer an issue in our day....hard drives are huge & cheap.
Fax capabilities come with any $10 modem (if not included).

if it's the operating system you want to upgrade then for a p3 CPU i would suggest win2000pro, if it's the processor you wish to upgrade then i would suggest buying a motherboard bundle which would include obviously the motherboard,CPU,heat sink and fan, and usually memory too. as for waiting for vista, i would wait another year to give the bugs a chance to be mainly fixed first(look at xp's service packs and updates) if you do upgrade the hardware then i would go for xp as it is now a stable operating system with all the updates.

Vista will easily double your hardware requirements. Buy before you forced to get Vista.

Some stores have a free upgrade coupon when you buy Windows XP. But it's coming out in 3 weeks or so they claim.

LET U MAKE UR HARWARE CONFIGURATION HIGHER and make UR OS SOFTWARE to be of Nominal Range..Beacuse Windows 2000 server is much faster than WinXP..This is all depends on how u maintain ur system..
I am using P3 system with Win2000..But i maintain my system like disk cleanup, disk defragment,etc..I am comfortable with my system..

My advice is Make ur hardware components to be higher..
Use less configuration Os that perfectly suits UR hardware..

Vista requires specific requirement's, and I don't think your 5 year old P III will hold it.
