Think of politics as a 12" ruler with the 6 inch mark the political middle. to the left of the 6" mark is democrats and to the right of the 6" mark is republicans. The farther you go on the ruler one way or the other is the more extreme in your beliefs. White supremacists would be far to the right of the 6 inch mark and code pink would be far to the left of the 6 inch mark. most successful politicians try to stay close to the 6 inch mark.

A politician that is "more to the left..." would be one who hold's certain beliefs:
1. The belief that government is the solution for everything, and that the individual is generally a poor buffoon that needs his leadership.
2. Taxation is above all else the way to making a more balanced society. The producer, or anyone who is deemed "rich", is inherently evil and must be regulated. Hence, "Tax the rich and feed the poor until there are no Rich no more" The problem with this is that whereever this scenario is tried to the extreme almost everyone is poor, except your Leftist politician.
3. Guns are not to be in the hands of the populace. A logical extension of the supposition that everyone is a buffoon. It is also a means of keeping the general populace from taking action against them via "Freedom to keep and bear arms".
4. Politicians are above the average citizen. Just look at William Jefferson, who was caught spiriting away 90,000 dollars stored in his freezer (cold hard cash?) and recently given a standing ovation by the Democrats. Only Leftist politicians would laud the ability to bilk the average citizen and get away with it.
ect ect.

It means they have one left wing and flip flop like a chicken with their heads cut off. They are a leftie, but just like to keep flopping, then point the finger at someone else. Liberal is right.

I don't think they really know themselves. Most likely the pol.. was veering to the left of the podium while speaking. Anyway chit sells papers and commentaries. really understanding what the fool was attempting to address does not.
