Usually the best way is to turn off the phone, remove the battery and clean the surface with an alcohol pad, or alcohol on a lint free cloth. The alcohol evaporates and will not cause any damage as long as the battery is not installed. Canned air can usually get dust, hair, lint, and other gross things out of the keypad. Always use a soft cloth on the screen and make sure the phone is completely dry before you re-install the battery or place the phone on the charger.
Never take phone apart (except for removing face plates) because this may void your Cellular Providers Insurance Coverage. If the inside needs to be cleaned you should take it to the dealer and have a tech clean and repair it for you.
Hope this helps!
