Smarmy - I think of it as a greasy kind of niceness. Rick Santorum is smarmy, if you ask me.

Of course that doesn't really apply to Smarmy Marmie and her son Artie Smarty Pants from Between the Lions. Oooh Aaah - we do a little dance in our smarty pants!

Peace!

It is a misconception that Jews invented the term anti-Semitic to refer to those anti-Jew, and thus "steal" the Semite label for themselves. In truth, the term "anti-Semite" was coined by a German anti-Semite who wished to distinguish the Jews from the general European population for reasons of persecution. While many people are theoretically Semites, including the Arabs, the intention of the inventor was to Jews only. Interestingly enough, when anti-Semitism came into vogue under Nazism, Hitler assured his Arab counterparts that the usage of the term referred strictly to Jews, and not to their Arab cousins, which they accepted. Nowadays, people attempt to usurp the term to apply to Arabs (who are Semties as well) in order to prevent labeling those anti-Jew but pro-Arab anti-Semite. However, the usage has clearly only been used as being against Jews, and was indeed accepted by Arabs as such when they had the upper hand. In summary, while the term "anti-Semitic" SHOULD mean being against any Semitic people, it has only ever meant being against one specific Semitic group - the Jews. Any attempt to change that now would be a corruption of history and all that that word has stood for.

One of those great made-up words (sniglets) that can be used for almost any purpose.
Kind-of a "greasy niceness" is a good way to put it.
