I think you are describing ear plugs. Some musicians use custom fitted high quality ear plugs to protect their hearing.

Many times the earpieces are to give the musician the sound of certain integral parts of the music perhaps a similar part from another section of instruments. While at other times such as in film work and such they are there to give the musicians the sound of the click track which is basically a little clicking noise that gives them the tempo of the music. This is usually used in movies and other venues where the music is very precisely synched with some sort of video projection; or in movie scores where they need to sync the music with the video. As for singers most often the earpiece is to give them feedback of their own voice to keep them in tune during harmonic parts. Hope this helps.

Those came out a while back, the idea was to replace the floor monitors you see at the front of the stage. It's wireless technology that the "In Ear Monitors" work on, and whoever is wearing them at the time can get a mix of everything that goes to the mixing console at a concert, meaning everything that is mic'd or sent direct line in. If a singer wants a complete mix of the band but wants his vocal to be above that - he can get that. if a guitarist wants bass and drums only in his earpiece and no vocals - he can get that.

The actual music to the song. They use them so they won't lose track of where they're at in the song. It's the same thing you hear when you go in to record at a studio. You wear the headset, and the music is in the headphones, so you can keep perfect time with the beat. That's why they wear earpieces.

The earpiece gives what is known as feedback. A singer/muscian needs to hear themselves and/or the other singers/musicians when performing. Each needs to hear what is relevant to them.

Singers need to hear their own pitch and the harmonies of other singers as well as the beat for their timing and also to hear the melody. Drummers and guitarists need to hear each other to keep time and so on, they also need to hear stage instruction.

They pick up wireless signals just like your car radio.

A lot of times, they're split into left/right channels so the artist can hear (1) themselves and (2) a much quiter version of the music.

they're ear monitors. you see those speakers in the front of the stage actually pointed at the band instead of outwards? those are speaker monitors. they're so not all the sound goes outward, so the band can hear themselves playing. ear monitors are just a more expensive, better way for the band members to hear themselves and the other band members playing so they can perform better.
