I bought a book at Borders about 2 weeks ago it cost like $17.95. I'd like to return it, but I lost the receipt and peeled the sticker with the barcode off. Can i still return it for credit at least?

Yes, you can return that to Borders.
When you get to the desk, say this verbatim:
"I bought this here at Borders a few weeks ago. I then gave it as a gift for Christmas, but they said they had it already. But I've lost the receipt, would it possible for me to return it for store credit?"
Works every time, trust me.
If you're uncomfortable with that, then buy another book, exactly the same. Use the receipt to return the one without the barcode. Then return the other one that has the sticker on, but without receipt. You will still get store credit for one, but the transaction may be easier.

That's quite tight..you shouldn't buy a book if you intend to give it back to the shop and past it off as unread. Some unsuspecting buyer who thinks they are getting a new book are being conned. How would you feel if you bought a book you'd been wanting for full price and found out that this book had once been read by someone else? OK so the chances are the person won't know that, but you have a moral obligation to fulfil. Flog it on ebay or some classifieds thing if you want money back.

You have to give them the approximate time and the exact date of your purchase, and the staff will run through the computer system on what is known as an "audit trail" to check verify your claims.
