And just shudder at the deplorable spelling and grammar?

Especially when you look at profiles and realize how young many of them are.

What happened to "no child left behind"?

I think a few got left behind.

Gang - I'm not referring to "internet shorthand" - or even bad typing skills. I'm talking about total inability to spell at a fourth grade level. It's frightening.

To those who think that grammar, spelling and diction aren't important, and that getting it out as fast as you can is more important, I IMPLORE you to read the constitution, read the declaration of independance, read Benjaman Franklin.

Its a matter of opinion. Proper grammar is not as important to me as getting the message across. I light is spelled llite or beleif is misspelled :), then I don't care. I understand what is being said.
Annmarie said it well. Many people are not overly concerned with details anymore. specially when its faster to type using a form of short hand or such as hay ppl wasup 2day r u n for a game?
Just my perspective.

It IS appalling!! I teach English in South Korea and, while it's a struggle for THEM to write/speak correctly, they've got a far better grasp of the English language than some of the posters here do.

Maybe going back to the way English USED to be taught is the answer?
