I found that veg and olive oil goes rancid when left on the stand's wheel shaft. I also don't want my rodents to lick off the oil when it has been sitting on metal.

I do a light rub of vasiline on the stand's wheel shaft. My rodents don't even notice it's there, and it stops the wheel from squeaking between wash times. I reapply the vasiline after I wash the wheel each week.

In our pet shop, there are no less than 15-20 rodent wheels being used at any one time because we use the smallest for dwarf hamsters- to the gigantic for chinchillas. We use only the safe wheels that can be seen on superpetusa.com. because they look like wire mesh and animals don't get hurt, also this brand for some reason, doesn't squeak as often. Vaseline is applied with a Q-tip and way outlasts Vegetable oil and PAM. Vaseline is also harmless to any rodent. It is generally used in cats as an at-home remedy for hairballs.

i dont think you cant use oil can will stink bad and the smell might harm the hamsters health. well if you dont want heard anymore noises then i think you should take out the wheel out of the hamster house .or u can just use tap to stop the wheel turning going around and stop the squeekin . try that maybe will work for you.

Oh wow i have this same problem with my mice wheels. I just get some vegetable oil and put it where it attaches and on the bar the wheel is connected to this should fix your problem! And if your wondering the oil is not harmful to them you shouldnt douce it in oil just kinda rub some on there .
Let me know how this works.
good luck!
PS. Dont use wd 40 That can SERIOUSLY harm your little guy!!!
also the person below me said you can get silent wheels, well i have those silent wheels and they still squeek!. Veg oil will work!

I use olive oil. Just pour some on a paper towel and rub it around the spots where the wheel connects to the base.

Hamsters also love the taste of olive oil (my two have), so this is an added bonus for them :)

My friend told me to use Pam vegetable cooking spray. It keeps the wheel squeak free and in case it happens to get in an area where the hamster can get it it's safe. I've used it, it works.

take the wheel off.... of course then he couldn't exercise. I suggest some vegetable oil so he won't be harmed. A lubricant like WD40 might be toxic.
