Advocating less use of commercial pesticides, I have found two highly effective, inexpensive and safe alternatives. Be aware that ants "see" with their fine and highly-tuned sense of smell. They do not visually see as mammals. They are blind. Having said this, a trip down to your local hardware store or garden center should supply you with two items: (1) Boric Acid, and (2) Pine Oil (strongest brand).
Only use the pine oil indoors if no one finds the odor offensive or may have an allergic reaction.

Begin by mixing 50% HOT WATER and 50% PINE OIL together and apply around ant house-entry ways (cracks, water pipes, window/door frames, etc.) by sponge or spritzer bottle. The benefit derived from the pine oil residue long after we can no longer detect its scent (which, fortunately most find pleasant), is that ants can't "smell/see" their way through it for a period of time. A repeat application may be necessary. It is also important to remove or secure any potential food sources that might attract them.
The second is highly effective in completely eradicating the ants outdoors. Boric Acid is granular. Evenly mix equal portions of Boric Acid and Cane Sugar. Sprinkle liberally, everywhere the ants are and especially around ant trails near and around their nest. Attracted by the sugar the ants will transport it back into the nest along with the Boric Acid, poisoning the colony from within. Boric Acid is considered non-toxic and non-attractive to animals and humans, HOWEVER, exercise caution when handling, and restrict children and pets from treated area. The ants move quickly and it will soon be gone if you don't frost the ground too heavily. Boric Acid and Cane Sugar is excellent also for dealing with roaches.

Get to know your enemy... research them on the web and figure out which ant species you are dealing with... there are some specific ways to control different species, or you may find out that there is nothing particularly harmful about the ants you have, and you just need to learn how to live in harmony with them. The Viet Cong didn't have a thing on ants... they are almost impossible to dislodge from a particular area that they like... realistically the best you can hope for (without using napalm or nuclear weapons) is to move them away from your area by making it less ant friendly. One method I have seen have some success is to buy gecco lizards to live in your garden... the only problem is the lizards leave after a few days and you have to get another one, but its better than spraying poison all around your garden.

I have tried to get rid of ants from my lawns as well, they just move over to another location, I wish I had a magic answer. I'm thinking of buying an Ant Eater as a pet though.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.
I found the information at http://www.pests.in useful.

Ants usually signify rain. Lucky you.

They like the smell of food, animals and look for water if it's hot. They'll keep moving around. Hope you find a solution.

Melt sugar and water together in a pan to make a liquidy syrup. Add boric acid (cockroach powder, about 2 T., but it depends on how much you make of the water and liquid). Place in a shallow lid. Ants will be attracted to the mixture, and it will kill them.
