Hi Amanda!
Here's a website that may help you with converting GBP to USD. http://www.xe.com/
A credit or debit card with the VISA logo is accepted worldwide. Fewer and fewer places are accepting traveler's cheques.
A word of advice . . . if you are planning on exchanging dollars for pounds, contact your bank about doing it BEFORE you leave the US!! You'll get a MUCH better exchange rate through them than you would through TravelEx (Currency exchange in most airports)
Carry at least a few US dollars with you on the plane. A lot of airlines are now charging for things like earphones / headsets and for drink service. (I forked over 4 USD for a Diet Coke on Estonian Air this summer!)
One other thought, make sure your parents have a copy of your passport and also any credit cards that you'll take with you, including contact numbers incase your card is stolen or lost while abroad.
Have a WONDERFUL trip!!

Pounds Sterling and only Pounds Sterling (and pence) Euros, dollars and other currencies are not accepted anywhere. Use the Post Office to change dollars to pounds as this is commission free.
Visa, Mastercard, Am Ex, Diner's Club, and other major credit cards are accepted almost every where. ATMs - locally called Cashpoints - are numerous but be aware of using them too often to withdraw money from your US bank account or credit card as there are hefty exchange and transaction fees.
The links below will give you some indication of the look of British Pound Notes (we don't call them Bills) and penny coins.
Pennies are the sub-unit of pounds.
One more tip try not to get large denomination notes like 50 pounds or even 20s it is better to carry around as many 5 and 10 pound notes as possible.

In London we use the £ sterling, you can change U.S $ free at any post office, travellers cheques can be exchanged at post offices free as well. Visa and Mastercard can be used in any shop, bank or ATM, you will need a four digit pin code to use them, supplied by your credit card company. American Express is accepted in larger stores only, but American Express Visa is as widly accepted as other visa and mastercard.
One tip for you is that if you gonna be travelling a lot by public transport in london then go to a railway station or underground and invest £3 in an Oyster card. Leaflets available at any station tells you how to use them.

They "deal" with European currency, like the Euro and the British Pound. No, they are not the same as US dollars, right now dollars have lesser value than both of those. I believe it's about 1.32 dollars to the euro right now. It's only goiing to get wirse in the near future so I suggest you exchange your money now to extract the money value
