It is a variable. It could represent any unknown number.
Ex- 2+x=5
In this problem x=3
x may be the variable you have to figure out in an eqaution.

the x in algebra represents a particular number for example:5=x+2 in transposing we get 5-2=x therefor x is equal to 3 which is a number

x is the unknown factor in a problem. For instance,

3X+4=10

is the same as

3(2)+4=10

The way that you would solve this is:

3x+4=10
3x=6 subtract 4 off of each side
x=2 divide each side by 3

Basically you are trying to figure out what 1 x equals.
Hope this makes sense.

if you have something like x + 2 = 4, the x is simply a missing number. the goal is to find what number x is, in this case it is 2. n and y are also common letters (called variables) in algebra

when you do not know what a number is you let it equal x. However, you could let the number = any other letter just as well.

but it is common to use x and the next letter chosen is usually y

you could say: x= 6 or you could say y = 6 or you could say
m = 6 or j = 6

it does not matter what letter you choose but x is the most common letter designated for an unknown number

"x" and other letters in an algebraic expression are variables which stand for an unknown number.

Usually,

x,y,z are for unknown real numbers
a,b,c are for constants
m,n,p are for parameters

-----

M. Risi, the author of math textbooks written in French for students of Quebec province, says that in his system, "the first letters of the alphabet, a, b, c... represent the constants, the last letters, x, y, z, represent the unknown variables, and the middle letters, m, n, p... represent the parameters."

Call it what you want X, N or Z
The letter can represent any number that is unknown so its up to you to figure it out
EXAMPLE
x+5=10
n+5=10
See it doesnt matter whether the letter is X P or Q its all the same thing call it the "Unknown Variable"
