a flash drive is a small USB stick that holds your files. They can be up to 5 gb of memory. They are portable and can be put in your pocket like a little pen and usually plug into any computer.

A hard drive memory is inside your computer.

Flash memory can as well be used inside of a computer. It is based on a silicon chip that is able to store and rewrite data as a hard drive.
As opposed to flash memory, hard drives are mechanical and work by storing data magnetically on spinning platers.
The difference is that hard drives can have data problems due to hardware failure and mishandling (ie dropping the drive). Flash memory eliminates this by having no mechanical parts. The maximum size has just been increased to 32 GB for flash memory for internal storage.

A hard drive uses a spinning magnetic disk to store information and flash memory is a silicon chip with no moving parts. Given the same amount of available data storage (say 8GB) a hard drive is much cheaper to buy than flash memory. Flash memory is not prone to damage from dropping it or shaking it violently like a hard drive is because flash has no moving parts.

Flash memory is solid state - it has no moving parts. Hard drive based memory is rotating memory. There is a platter, or platters, and heads and a motor to spin the platters and move the heads.

Flash memory has a finite life, measured in the tens to hundreds of thousands of write cycles, but is very rugged.

Hard drives have an indefinite number of write cycles, are typically faster to write to, but are more fragile. Hard drives are much less fragile than they were, but they are fragile compared to flash memory.

The major difference is based on the way they store the media.
Flash based storage is what is called solid state media. The data is stored on non mobile parts, while hard drive based storage is stored on optical media. Optical media is read though sensors as it is spinning. (CD's are optical media as well)

The major advantage of Flash based storage is the ability for it to be jostled and not get scratched / lose data to misalignment.

The major advantage of Hard Drive based media is that the technology has been around longer, and is able to retain greater amounts of information.

Ex: iPod 80gb uses HD. iPod Shuffle uses Flash Based.

Flash memory is a very small stick of EXTREMELY fast memory. the most i believe i have seen is about 4 gigs. there is no moving parts which makes it fast.

Hard drive memory is a larger, slower drive. this actualy has a phisical disk that spins and a "pin" like "head" that goes over the platter (disk) and reads/writes data as the platter spins. this is very simular to cd's and records. but rather than pits and wat not in vynal or metal, it uses magnetism.

because there is a moving part, the spinning platter/disk, it is a very slow proccess. but the advantage is 300 gigabytes, rather than 3.

moving parts and portability

hard drive has a disc that is moving and can hold massive amounts of info but is limited to staying inside your computer. Flash memory is portable, has no moving parts, and is limited to maybe 5 or so gigs

memory (a.ok.a RAM): Determines how lots courses it could run at as quickly as. 4 gb is a competent selection for laptops in cutting-side cases. 6-8gb is conventional for laptop complicated force: Determines how lots stuff the computer can keep. as an occasion, music, photos, video games, downloads, and so on and so on. Sims 3 might desire to have the flexibility to run on maximum laptops without substantial lag. The processor is likewise an exceedingly massive element on how video games might desire to run, as nicely because of the fact the photographs card.

one thing-- flash memory isn't affected by magnetism
flash memory is usually smaller than hard drive memory(but in theory it doesn't have to be)
flash memory is quicker to install and use on different systems hence the name i suppose !!
