OK, you probably have already heard the announcement from Apple about the iPhone, but that pretty much settles the debate: GO WITH CINGULAR!!!
It makes sense that Apple chose to support Cingular, since it is based on the GSM standard, which is way better than CDMA, which Verizon and Sprint both use. Try going to another country and using your Sprint/Verizon phone... Forget it! Cingular also has the best overall coverage in the USA.
Not only that, Cingular has introduced an uber-cheap data plan for only $20 (price may have increased since roll-out last month). Unlimited data & 200 IMs for only $20! way cheaper than any other internet connection service offered through your telephone or cable companies!
If you are a heavy user of minutes and on a budget, but don't travel much, I suggest T-Mobile if you live in a metropolitan area with good T-Mobile coverage. Their plans typically give the most minutes for the cheapest price (and they use GSM for great international roaming). If you really talk a lot during the day time and are price-sensitive, I would get Verizon. While the phone compatibility sucks and their pricing isn't as good as T-Mobile, they have much better coverage than Sprint and are cheaper than Cingular.
Good luck and take a look at the new iPhone!

Sprint stinks since they merged with Nextel. T-mobile is meh. Cingular is good, so is Verizon. I prefer Verizon, their area coverage seems stronger probably because they've been around the longest.

it depends on where you live and what the coverage is. Check Consumer Reports they have a review of all of the cell services. Verizon has the best coverage but maybe not the best price. Also check with your employer, you might be eligible for a special discount. I get 23% off of my Sprint charges through my employer discount.

I have verizon and have had great service so far. If you look at their coverage map you will notice their aren't many places that they don't have some sort of coverage.
The others may have a plan that may suit you more, you must simply weigh what best suits your personal style and budget.
