Apart from speaking skills, what else does being an attorney offer for aspiring politicians? Would a government prosecutor/public defender or private attorney gain more skills/be more suited for public office?

Being a lawyer is definitely an open sesame to politics. In the court you can learn to manipulate truth and make it in the way you want it to be and not as it is. This is an additional qualification when you enter politics because this craft can even help you send your troops to war for unjust reasons- again , based on ur version of "truth" and not the real truth. All the best for your career!!!

Lawyers are - whatever you might think of them - highly educated people.

Given the choice - I guess I'd rather have a lawyer for my senator, than the tweeker who drives the ice cream truck down my street every summer!

But seriously - being a politician really means being a "lawmaker" - and I should think that an education in law would be beneficial.

I think a lawyer becoming a politician makes sense because lawyers know and understand the law and politicians are law makers.

Ya pretty much it helps because you do lots of arguing and trying to persuade people and really our representatives write laws... but they make interns do lots of the work.
