I have the old version of the ps2, the big one. I bought it a couple years ago. Everytime i put a game in it makes these wierd loud ticking noises and it doesnt seem to read the disk. I leave it for a while and then it says it has read the disk, when i click on the disk to play it starts loading then goes back to sayin cannot read disk.
I didnt do anything to the ps2, its been sitting in the same spot since the day i bought it.

the loud ticking noises is the result of the serveo trying to move the lens of the laser to read the disc. it's what keeps the laser in focus on the disc. the loud ticking generally occurs when the photodiode in the laser unit doesn't detect any light and the serveo control computer gets confused and starts bouncing the lens around. it doesn't hurt anything, however, it generally indicates one of three things.

a) your media is REALLY damaged
b) there's failure of componets in the laser system, weather it's the laser diode, the photodiode, or a mirror
c) the lens is really dirty.

the older PS2's i've seen developed disc reading problems, and were generally solved easily by cleaning the lens.you could try one of the commercial discs with a brish on it..the unit's i worked on were in a smoky enviroment and required a wet-cleaning. it's not real easy to dismantle a PS2 to clean it, however, if you're careful, you can sometimes get it open enough to gain clear access to the laser lens. a q-tip and rubbing alcohol are all you need.

if cleaning doesn't solve it, and your disc isn't damaged...then i'm sorry to say your laser assembly is dead...you either can buy a new ps2 or maybe get a replacement.

EDub, quit making stuff up. That is how inaccurate information gets spread around...Sony didn't put chips in there to cause the PS2 to fail. That's just complete hogwash. You'd have better luck getting me to believe Lance Bass is straight.

Sony installed chips in their ps2s so that they'd fail in tandem with the release of the ps3. It was a marketing ploy to secure sales of next-gen consoles.
