I have only previously played a few friendly poker ring games and online games, and I was amazed when a few new players demanded that the dealer discard the top card whenever a deal was due. Maybe its correct practice - I'm not a poker expert. But does discarding the top card sound correct to any experienced poker player?

Yes it is called the burn. I deal poker in Vegas and each time the flop, turn and river are put out, the dealer must burn a card. The reason for this is to prevent cheating, so if a card is marked on top of the deck, it will not be used and the one under it will be. There should be 3 burn cards in hold'em, if a dealer forgets to burn a card on a hand the floor must be called over. On-line since all the cards are the same i don't think that they burn cards, but in live games you must burn a card on each street.

Yes you are supposed to discard the top card before laying down the flop, river, and the turn because it is supposed to increase the chances of getting the card you wanted to get but at the same time that could have been the card you wanted but you would never know. Also the card on top could be marked and the dealer might be cheating.....you never know

I've been playing and watching experts the past 4years

Yes you are, I just wanted to make a comment on an answer I read here, no offense to the person who wrote it but burning or discarding the top card is not meant to increase or decrease chances, it is just done for the reason everyone else said.....eliminating the advantage of that a player might have if the card was marked and he knew about it.

burn a card before the flop(the first three face up card), before the turn(the 4th faceup card), and before the river (the 5th faceup card)

If the dealer misdeals and accidentally flips over a player's facedown card, that card is dead, and the player receives the first burn card in its place. In this case, the dealer will not burn another card before dealing the flop

Yes it is supposed to be discarded, for the reason that the top card may be marked, so that could influence the betting of the player that knows its marked and what card could be coming next. This is actually part of the rules.

You light the card on fire. lol jk... When you're putting down the flop, the river and the turn, in between each you put a card face down off to the side. ie: before the flop you "burn" a card so it is essentially never seen/used in play
