Jaco Pastorius has been called the last great jazz musician, as well as the best jazz bassist of all time. His self-titled debut album in 1976 gained international critical acclaim. It was his only solo-album, but he did make many guest appearances for artists like Joni Mitchell, Pat Matheny, and Weather Report. In 1987, after a year-long self-destruction, Pastorius was beaten to death at the age of 36 when he tried to crash an after-hours club.
