A dimple is caused by the excess fat on the cheeks andefforts at manipulating the skin through smile etc. It is not a genetic trait to be inherited from a parent. As and when the child loses the extra fat the dimple will disappear.. Don't waste your child's precious days guessing from where the dimple came.

Because there are dominent and recessive genes, when you have a dominent and a recessive gene for the same trait (in this case dimples), then the dominent cancels out the recessive, but, it could be that you and your wife are both hybrids, which would mean that you both have a dominent and a recessive gene, and both of you gave you baby the recessive gene, so the baby has both recessive genes, and no dominent, so it has a dimple.

Because of the way genetics work with the dominant and recessive traits, you and your wife probably both had recessive traits for dimples. However, traits from past generations don't disappear from the gene pool, which means either of your parents could have had dimples or even their parents! Ever seen that red haired kid or that extremely tall kid with parents with black hair or are 5'6"? Works the same way!

Why bother? Babies have dimples that usually do not exist in later life. Babies with dimples are cute .So why waste time.

just because you don't display dimples you each carry genes that cause dimples. more than likely each child that you have has a 50% chance of having dimples.

DNA! It was not in your DNA or your wifes DNA--but it was DNA from another generation that one of you inherited and was passed down to your child. Thats cute to have dimples. :-)
