Depends on the computer. And that depends on what you want to do with it.
If you want to play the newest games on a big screen, want backup drives, etc: you need about $1500.
If you only need to type some letters and use some internet and email, you can go with the cheapest PC you can find ($350, or so).
You can pick up the old type of monitors for free on many places (Everybody wants TFT/LCD now, and ditches the CRT (tube) ones.) You could also ask some local company if they have an old computer which they don't use anymore. Generally, many companies ditch their computers after about 3.5 years. They are then still perfectly capable of using Office, internet and email.

Depends upon what you want in it for software.

A decent basic desktop pc computer for the average person at home would run about $650, Complete with a Monitor and a printer. Sometimes companies and stores offer great rebates and you can save yourself $200 or more just by sending in the rebates

you should pay for what you get and considering the amount of different spec computers out there then the prices vary a lot ,- gaming machines will have high spec graphics card, high ram, fast cd/dvd drives etc etc. an office pc will maybe not be so good on graphics but may have larger hard drive/s. but as an average i would say around 3 to 400 hundred quid.

Just for the box, no monitor, $300. For the monitor and box $500 on up. If your into gaming and need a do-it-all whatever, someone else might have the answers. Course you can surf the net, I would recommend checking out Emachines at Walmart, I've had one for years and it's still going strong. Cheers
