The slippers were silver in the book. It was metaphorical for what was going on at the time. The silver slippers actually represented a movement to put the United States currency on the silver standard, but another movement believed the gold standard was the way to keep the currency on track. Thus, the yellow brick road (gold) would lead the US back "home". But the silver slippers in the end proved to be what got her back home.
