Hello, I am looking for suggestions for Metal bands. In particular, I am looking for very heavy (not necessarily fast) metal but with vocals that are clean and as carefully thought out as the music.

One of my favorite bands is Fates Warning but they aren't that heavy. John Arch is awesome but not heavy. James Labrie is also great and comes close to what I am looking for but it's too upbeat.

It just seems that most "metal" bands coming out are carbon copies of each other -- and that sucks when you don't like the original to begin with. I love the music but will gladly leave the grunting in favor of real singing. Don't get me wrong, I was into Death Metal from the very beginning of the genre, I've just grown out of it.

Bands I actively listen to include Dream Theater, Savatage, Fates Warning. Bands I used to listen to Metallica, Testament, Death Angel, Suicidal Tendencies, King Diamond, etc

Thanks to everyone for responding! I've been a metal fan for 20 years so most of the mentioned bands I was familiar with.

But of the handful of bands I had never heard, Echoes of Eternity is the winner! That is awesome stuff. It gives me alot of new ideas for writing my own stuff now that I know that it can sound this good.

Metal is not about noise, its about real musicians creating real music.
There are bands that are literally signed because its all noise, and amazingly some people buy into it. There is a difference between musicians and guys just churning away at guitars with sheer abandon.
It's easy to tell the difference.

And yes, Fates Warning's "Awaken the Guardian" is arguably one of the all-time best metal albums, granted its not for everyone.

Hey man nice to see a fellow Fates Warning fan! Awaken the Guardian is a fantastic album. It seems nobody can understand what METAL and CLEAN VOCALS means so I'll try to help you out.

I assume if you know King Diamond then you've heard Mercyful Fate, but otherwise check it out.

Seems to me Metal Church would be right up your alley, especially the first few albums.

If you want some awesome, underrated NWOBHM check out Angel Witch immediately.

Green Carnation are highly experimental, progressive metal fusing many genres but there are growls as well as clean vocals. My reccomendation is the album Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

Into Eternity are very upbeat, fast and rockin but they also include growled vocals with the clean vocals.

Hopefully some of these might be up your alley... check em out.

Dude now its the time to listen to Amon Amarth!!

They are a viking band with fantasy lyrics and there are no words to discribe how amasing the tune they play, you should get into the songs they play. First song you should listen to is 'Runes to my memory' its their recent song they've released and its awesome, the singer does growling but hey it can still be understood :P

Second one you may like is Shadows Fall, which has some good riffs to it and the vocalist is quite good as well :)

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE..DUH!

dude dude dude I'M JUST KIDDING!

hahahaha but seriously.. this is a hard question for me to answer, because I love the crazy screaming vocals like Hatebreed. But hopefully I can throw out a few songs for you to check out.

Bullet For My Valentine: They have quite a few heavy songs with clean vocals. Try "Hit The Floor", "10 Years Today", "Cries In Vain", "Suffocating Under Words Of Sorrow" (has a little screaming, but mostly clean vocals), "Tears Don't Fall" (eh not my favorite..also has a little screaming, but barely any).. also "The Poison" has a little screaming but are mostly clean vocals. Just check them all out! Haha but I think you'll like the first 2 songs I listed the best.

Killswitch Engage: "The End Of Heartache"

Also try out some Hour Cast at http://www.myspace.com/hourcast I don't see them as metal at all, but they're being played on Uranium & Headbangers ball, and they're even being classified by some as metal. The vocals are ALL clean, and Patrick's voice is AMAZING, I've seen them live twice and it just blows me away. Check them out!!

=)

Try TROUBLE. a GREAT band from Chicago. Their early records have a very large Black Sabbath influence. They later records are a lot more riff oriented, and have hints of phycadelics. They have a new album called SIMPLE MIND CONDITION coming out feb 20.

Try Dio

Ronnie James Dio has an amazingly powerful voice. It's very crisp and pure. No one hits a high note like him.
