could be that they are "soft" stones. opals shatter easily as do tanzanite.

The reason why a crystal is a crystal is because it consists of atoms that are lined up in a very speciofic, regular arrangement. The arrangements are dependent on the postive and negative charges that exist on the surfaces of the atoms because of the electrons in the outer orbitals and electrons exchanged between the ionic bonds of the compounds.

In many crystals the arrangments are symmetical in a way that leaves a weak spot in a certain direction within the crystal. Those crystals can be split by pressure or a impact that creates a force along the line of cleavage. Skilled jewelers take advantage of their knowledge of crystal chemistry to deliberately shape crystals into gems.

ps you can not clean a gem by putting it in the freezer. Consult your local registered gemologist/jeweler for methods of caring for your valuable gems.

Are you looking for the metaphysical answer to this? If so, here it is.

Stones will break when they've collected too much "junk", so make sure they are being cleansed on a regular base. You can actually do this just by sticking them in your freezer for a little while. There are plenty of other ways to do this too, just whatever is most comfortable with you.
Where are you keeping the stones? It may be time to find a new location to store them as well.
If you want more info on this let me know.

Matt is absolutely correct, but I just wanted to add this to give a simpler mental image. Imagine a pine board 3', by 1'. the grain runs lengthwise. It is quite easy to split the grain (the secret of Karate), but quite difficult to break across the grain. The lattice structure of a crystal is similar.

It depends where you keep them. Each rock or any other thing has a level of hardness. The hardess substance is a diamond and it still breaks. Don't know why it shrinks though.

The ''AB'' [user] has the true answer for that...If you leave other people touch your crystals, then the crystal get not only your energy but the energy of other people 2....So the ''junks'' from your ebergy and their energy is too much for the crystal to keep...I know cuz my old crystals broke too for the same reason..xxxooo
