I don't really understand what an Apocalypse is?

I asked a question yesterday about the Myan's predicting the end of the world in 2012. (See this link to my question here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhshknsjiX4sfa74HFo62aLsy6IX?qid=20070105085131AAf8hAR ) Someone mentioned how it has to do with an Apocalypse...which she made it seem like an Apocalypse is the end of a civilization. How would that be possible if history never "ended" and all the civilizations we learned about either continued or transformed into new ones? Just help me explain!

I think its bible stuff. Story about how in the 'end' people who are 'saved' will go to heaven and others will suffer as the world come to end. I think nearly all religions have some type of 'end time' prophecies. Seem to be a good way to scare people into religion although that's not why most become a believer. One might say it is way to feel secure about yourself that a god will save you at the end or to scare the crap out of people who are non-believers.

Apocalypse is derived from a Greek word meaning Revelation. The last book of the New Testament is called either Apocalypse or Revelation. It deals with a vision depicting the end of this world and the beginning of a heavenly eternity, with the destruction of the wicked and the salvation of the redeemed. Because of this aspect of the Book of Revelation, the word "apocalypse" in English has come to mean the catastrophic end of the world, or of a civilization.

The Apocalypse she was probably referring to is the end of times. The end of this planet basically. In that case, it would be an end to all civilizations and people in general. It's a biblical reference.
