I'm a piano teacher, and needed to record my students. This is what I did:

1. I purchased a USB microphone (not a headset one, though). I didn't pay much for it, and it's only a mono mic. I got it at a big box electronics store. If you want a stereo one for better sound, go to the music store.

2. Go to this site and download the program "audacity" http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (even better: it's FREE!!!)

3. Plug in the mic, hit the red 'record' button on the program and you're good to go.

I saved my recordings in a file marked 'recordings', and then opened them up in iTunes, converted them to the appropriate file, and burnt a CD through iTunes.

Here's the site where I learned how to do this:

Microphone from Best Buy: $30
Audacity Program: Free
Blank CDs: $5
Acing your college entrance audition: priceless

Good luck!

I record onto a tape player and then record from that to a cd burner. I bought an external cd recorder for $300 about 5 years ago. They are probably a lot cheaper now. you can record from anything with rca jacks. I,ve even gone straight from the headphone jack on my walkman.

if you have an electronic piano get a MIDI adapter, Cakewalk Software works good if you have the money (rebirth for freeware), MIDI adapters are like 30-50, Cakewalk is $99, if you don't have an electronic piano prepare to spend alot more, a good one starts out in like the 300 dollar range but can go much higher.

Its probably cheaper for you to rent some time in a professional sound studio and have it put together there. Good equipment costs good money, and then there is the time involved in learning how to use it properly. With the sound studio, usually, there is somebody there who is at least familiar with the equipment that can assist you as part of your fee for using the studio.
