The "other woman" who has a sexual relationship with an adulterous man is called his "mistress." It's a euphemism. Otherwise a mistress is the female counterpart to a master.

It depends on what context your using the word.

A mistress can be a woman who has exclusive relationship with a (usually) married man, which includes financial considerations (i.e. rent, car, bills, etc.)

Mistress is a colloquial term used to describe a young, unmarried female.

Mistress is also the address made to a female dominatrix within the BDSM lifestyle.

While the other answers are correct, the original meaning of 'mistress" was the wife of any man. The word was abbreviated, when written, as "Mrs." and hence the normal appellation pronounced "missis" or "missus" for a married woman.
