It can depend on the cause. Minor to moderate pain can be relieved by a topical anesthetic throat spray that can be bought at the market or drug store. Throat lozenges can help and also hot salt water gargles. These 3 methods work topically at the source of the pain and therefore work more quickly. An OTC analgesic may provide longer relief but doesn't work as quickly. (Has to go through the GI tract, right?) Moderately severe to severe pain may require bigger guns that are also by prescription only. Some people find hot water soothing while others find ice water numbing. For the time being, avoid acidic fluids, such as orange and tomato juice. Carbonated drinks may irritate as well.
Now where in the world did this "Marsha" person get the idea that you have a fever, infection & inflammation. All you asked about was a sore throat! And vitamin C has never prevented infection, further or otherwise. I also don't understand how anyone can tell you what you "might" have (strep). The only symptom you've mentioned is a sore throat and that's not nearly enough to suggest strep throat to anybody.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Gargle with warm salt water. There's also good sprays you can buy in a drug store that will help numb the back of your throat. Cepacol Lozenges and Throat Spray works well. Also... sipping on ice water is good too, but be sure u gargle with the warm salt water. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Once has started not much you can do to stop it - can only care for the present sympthoms.
Take pain meds/aspirin to keep temperature down, even if low level, for further prevents infection and inflamation.
Drink plenty of liquids other than colas......lots of water, juice, etc to keep your throat lubricated but not overwhelmed.
Eat soup - easy on throat and filling too.
Take Vitamin C to help prevent further infection.
If continues more than one week, seek medical attention for may need antibiotics or shot.
Feel better soon!

I'm a nurse. Warm salt water goggles, Tylenol or ibuprofen, OTC sore throat medicine, and rest. You might have strep and nothing but an antibiotic can cure it. See a doctor if you don't feel any better or develop a fever.

try massaging your glands make sure that you massage the glands down as to make sure that you are draining the puss out of the lymph nodes . the other thing you should do is suck on a piece of oregon grape root . It grows wild in BC. dig up a small part of the plant and rinse it off . Keep it in your mouth until it is nearly disolved.

Gargle with a solution of garlic soaked in water. It fights infection like a steam roller over a daisy.

Buy some zinc lozenges, they are the best. Follow the label, you should not take more than they recommend.
