Yes. All our cities supply water which is filtered and chlorinated to the highest standards BUT as a tour guide I would recommend that you drink bottled water rather than have an upset stomach while touring S.A. I do personalised tours to Kruger Park and other game reserves which also have good clean water supplies.

Anybody can drink tap water in South Africa - am not sure about Swaziland, but I presume it will be safe as well. Do not drink water directly from a stream - will for sure not be safe. We had some reports lately about unsafe water in South Africa - this may be what you heard about. Yes, you are right, (I do not know about Chemicals), it can be that the water purifying process in South Africa differs from America, and it may be that you can get sick from tap water in South Africa. I would suggest that you maybe stick to buying bottle water here. It is available at almost any cafe and groceries shop - as well as at street stands.

Yes you can drink water in Johannesburg and it comes from taps. Yes running water in South Africa what a concept. I know i should not be so sarcastic but I do get tired of these questions. You may even be surprised we have tarred roads in South Africa.

Yes it is. South Africa's water is one of the cleanest in the world, and if tap water does not interest you we have a huge variety of bottled water for your convenience. You do realise that Johannesburg is a massive modern city? The only difference between Johannesburg and other massive cities is that Johannesburg is a green city - we have millions upon millions of trees lining our streets and in our homes.

Yes it is safe. Honestly, I don't get the rationale for suggesting bottled water. I use bottled water more than tap water, and it's only because I travel a lot and its easier to get cool bottled water than asking people at the shop whether they have tap water in the fridge. Again at the restaurants they'd rather sell you water than give you tap water.

Joburg is a huge modern city and their water treatment standards are very high. But that goes with all domestic water in the country. Anything untoward in the water in water treatment gets big negative media attention and not local authority likes that.

Any water that comes out of a tap/faucet is safe to drink. Dont drink river or dam water (often contains Bulharzia). All tap water is treated and filtered.
