The republican congress couldn't pass it on it's own merits, so they tacked it onto the "Port Security" bill to sneak it by us.

Now wether you are a poker player or not, WHAT does Partypoker.com have to do with "port security"?

For those of you who aren't familiar with the new law, George Bush recently signed into law, an act which makes it illegal for grown men and women to play poker online.

And he is supposed to represent the party that is "against big government". It doesn't matter if you are a poker player or not.

What if next time, they ban "Yahoo Answers"?

Mr. Shale - yes I know there are ways around it - but how sad is it that we as law-abiding American CITIZENS have to find ways to circumvent the stupidity of our own government? *sigh*

just another part of the American home grown fascism. George bush is not to blame (hes an idiot and a drunk). the ones who you yanks should be on the lookout for is those neoconservative bastards that call themselves politicians. this bill is a prime example in only a too long line of blunders and destruction of freedoms, may i not mention the patriot act. and because of all this can you really say that you are safer:http://www.wsbtv.com/news/5082682/detail.html
when stuff like this happens you have to wonder eh?

Laws are routinely attached to larger acts, as much for convenience as anything else. Most laws are enacted in this way. Democrats AND Republicans had to have voted for it because there simply weren't enough
Republicans to enact any law without some support for across the aisle.

The real reason that gambling is so tightly regulated is to ensure that the government gets its tax cut from the games, and to prevent organized crime from "fixing" the games.

Online gambling is unregulated and uninspected. The very nature of computer gaming means that it is possible for the House to "read" the cards in your hand in order to know what hands cand beat you, and there is no way to know that the computers don't "manufacture" cards that will beat you whatever your hand holds.

You can't even be sure that the "other" players in the room are real people...

What is the reasoning behind this? Are people using poker accounts to fennel money outside of the country or some rediculous thing?
I really don't understand why anyone would care who plays poker online.
But, really, when big brother started taking over every other portion of our lives, should this really surprise us? We aren't allowed to use our own judgement on what we eat, if we smoke, or how we worship, why would we be allowed to gamble on our own time?

Yea , I agree. Unfortunately this administration and republicans in general are becoming brazen in thier infringing on all of our rights . From the Patriot act , Port security Act and others , the government is slowly taking away all our rights . One day we will all wake up and wonder why people ae being whisked away . KGB style .
