They also do this at the grocery store and do not care if the line is long.

I think you have to keep in mind here that "lonely" is merely your perception of these people. Our lives are often intertwined with others that we have no inkling of their background, experiences, or personalities. These people just may be more outgoing, or extroverted, or having an exceptionally wonderful day. Maybe they dont have a full time job so their not in a rush....maybe they made a personal decision to be more outgoing or nice to strangers. Whatever the case, you can see my point. What I would recommend to you is using online banking. I rarely if ever have to take a trip directly into the bank. This will spare you run ins with "lonely" people.

I don't think they are lonely, I think they are just friendly. The world we live in can be quite impersonable and people who talk as they are conducting business are simply trying to make it more pleasant. Think about it, the tellers (or store clerks, or customer service representatives, waiters/waitresses, etc) deal with the same thing over and over again all day, many times without any appreciation. The people that actually stop and speak to them while they conduct business offer a welcome change and a "breath of fresh air" making their job more enjoyable. Perhaps if everyone tried to be more friendly, we'd all reap the benefits. Just something to think about....

I hate the "they are old people excuse" remember one day you will be in the same category you are criticizing. GROW UP! One day you might be wanting just some one to talk to. Maybe that is why we have to have people remind us constantly to help others. We live in a high tech, low touch. I hope there is not a day all of you look for another person to talk to rather than a technical device to tell you how to live, what to do, where to go etc. For me I would rather take the time to talk to people young or old any day of the week rather than to depend on computers to give me happiness and an inner sense of peace.

I think it's often due to retired people who have forgotten what it's like to be in a hurry. You're only annoyed because you're not willing to spend that kind of time yourself to be a little more human in this hectic world. Relax. If there's nothing you can do about it, you can either let it upset you or choose to be happy. Learn a little meditation or something. While I'm Catholic myself, I highly recommend the techniques that have come out of Zen Buddhism.

You answered your own question...they're lonely!
Or perhaps they personally know the teller and are catching up on things.

I think you answered your own question: they're lonely. They have nobody else to talk to and the clerk has to be nice to them, so they milk it for all it's worth. And yeah, it annoys the hell outta me, too.

Isn't the answer right in your question? Because they're lonely and they've got no one to talk to.
